Do I need to be a nerd to join?
We have re-titled our blog "Nutrition Nerds Unite", so if you are not yet a nutrition nerd, you have to aspire to be one. No exceptions!
If I don't read the book, can I still come?
Yes Julie, you can still come ;)
However, to truly become a nutrition nerd, and enjoy the full experience of NNU - you have to read the books! We want you to share your knowledge/learning with others - and to do this, you have to read the books! However, if you are unable to keep up with the readings on occasion you are still welcome to join and participate. You just won't earn the title of Nutrition Nerd... you might not get the t-shirt either.
p.s. I think Chapters might already be sold out of our first book already! Nice work :)
Do I have to do the whole paleo thing?
Psuedo-science haters welcome! No, seriously. While we have our own opinions about nutrition, we came to those opinions after doing our own reading and research, thinking about things and then a lot of trial and error. NNU isn't about telling you to eat or think a certain way. We just want you to eat and think and maybe think about what you're eating (and how you're sleeping, managing stress, having fun and working out, too). The conclusions you draw and the experiences you have are your own. Not to get all one hand clapping in the woods, but this little journey has to be your own thang. We are starting with the Paleo Solution because it's one of the easiest nutrition reads around that also really gets into the science of what our bodies do with food. We think you'll find it riviting, even if you decide not to go the paleo route.
If I can't make the meetings, can I still participate?
Absolutely! XMisterParkx has offered to set up a web-classroom for us - not really sure what that means right now (and we call ourselves nerds!), but sounds like you'll be able to participate online if you can't make it out to the meetings! Thanks Paul!
We'll also be posting our discussion questions and a synopsis of our discussions on the blog before and after each meeting. We're hoping to have an active online NNU following, in addition to those who attend the meetings.
What if I have specific nutrition goals? What kind of support will this group offer?
There is no better way of reaching your nutrition goals than to read and learn about nutrition. If you are struggling to reach a specific goal, we would be THRILLED to help you out. We can answer questions, direct you to resources, provide advice, or go over what you're currently eating . For us to give you our best advice, we'll need at least 1 week's work of food journaling. I know. Food journaling kind of sucks. But it can really help to figure out what's working for you and maybe what isn't. Please - either post a question on the blog, send us an email at nutritionbookclub@gmail.com, grab us at the gym, or talk to use before/after a meeting
I know a non-CrossFitter who is interested. Can he/she join?
What?! There are still non-CrossFitters out there!? Come talk to us, I'm sure we can work something out ;) They can expect a burpee buy-in.
Can I bring my kids to book club?
Yes. Assuming we host book club at CrossFit, they are welcome to come. If they get too loud, we'll just stick them all in tires and roll them down the alley...
I went out to Chapters and bought the book! YAY!
ReplyDeleteBut I see that most people are voting for Saturday's, which I will most likely never be able to make beacuse of work.
I had a thought and was wondering what you 2 as the nerd leaders, and the one's joining the group think about this idea...
Do you think we could switch off the meeting times on a monthly basis? So month 1 it's @ CF on Sat, month 2 Tues nights? Or seeing as not as many people voted for tues, every 2 months switch it off? Month 1-2 @ CF, month 3 Tues, month 4-5 CF etc...
Ummm...you call yourself nerds? These are FAQs...not Qs&As. Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteHC - I'm sure we'll be able to work something out. Might be nice for everyone to have the option. Leya and I will talk about it some more and let everyone know what day(s) we decide on in the next few weeks.
ReplyDeleteyay online classroom idea :) haha so technically i can participate from the other side of teh planet..... and i plan to do so if possible!!!!! so awesome!
ReplyDeleteHC Ange: I work every second Saturday as well, so I think that idea is awesome!
ReplyDeleteI like food
ReplyDeleteNow to be a little serious...just a little. :)
ReplyDeleteI have started reading Paul's copy. I'll do my best to finish the required readings before meeting dates.
Now to be really serious...I really like food.
Hello Spicy Paleo, I don't believe we've met!
ReplyDeleteHey there, Robin, no we haven't met. I'm Ruth from Amarillo, Texas. I'm one of the long-distance followers:)
ReplyDeleteLeya (life saver!) helped turn me onto to the Paleo diet over at SoulCysters when I found out I was gluten intolerant this year and then I managed to find CrossFit (both through Paleo boards and Leya's posts at FitCysters). I'm now addicted to both, though I still have a lot of fat to shed and a LOT of work to be a decent CrossFitter...but I'll get there (someday).
Ruth! I'm so glad you decided to give paleo a shot and then found CrossFit. And not just because of your awesome recipes! I'm so making that cocoa steak rub and the keema has become a staple meal. So yummy!
ReplyDeleteWelcome here, Ruth, nice to "meet" you! So glad you found us - you may hear us Canadians start to complain about the cold weather sooner than later... and then we'll wish for a field trip down to Texas. We actually got to meet one of Leya's online friends in person at the games this year in California.
ReplyDeleteI wish book club was starting sooner!!
